I see a lot of people being disappointed with Switch 2 just being...well, a second Switch, and Nintendo being seemingly done with innovation.
The thing is, is Nintendo actually done with the Switch concept? Has this concept lost any of its innovative potential?
Because, tbf, this hybrid handheld/home console idea remains very much unique in the consoles space, and at the time it blended 20 years of Nintendo innovations in both handheld and home ranges.
@transcendentempress No one was complaining about innovation when the 3DS was revealed as the successor to the DS. They're both folding rectangles with 2 screens, but people didn't think innovation was dead at Nintendo then!
The software makes a difference, which we haven't seen at all yet really.
Just because it's still a rectangle with a screen doesn't mean there aren't innovations (such as the optical mouse sensor...all the innovation doomers seem to ignore that being a new thing...)
@transcendentempress i definitely don't think it's an outdated idea i think there is so much more potential for them to reach towards but i can kinda see why someone wouldn't think much of it from the little tease we got. it was a cool animation but its kinda hard to decipher exactly what's the same or different unless you've heard about or seen the leaks. plus with steam deck, rog ally, legion go, ect ect i can see someone being concerned with how nintendo will keep up with them. to me i don't think they even have to as long as they don't compromise on the og switch's game quality
@transcendentempress I just think, why make a second console then ? You can't tell me it wasn't possible to have better performance since the switch release no ?
Like for me, it's mostly to make more sales and rekindle the hype
@tournesol@transcendentempress I think they could have made it a "pro" version or whatever, and give extra perfs, but having it be a Switch 2 also allows them to control the available games. If it was a Pro version, people would expect to be able to play all the games that run on it also on their non-pro version, but the performance difference may not allow it.
@tournesol Ah, honestly there are quite a lot of big exclusive games that have squeezed mostly everything the og hardware had (I still remember how the console was struggling on Animal Crossing when my partner had stuffed the island to the brim in her run), and even among indie games, if I take the Cat Quest III I took on it last year, even on a game like this, it's playable, but you clearly feel a bit more of power boost would be more than welcome for a smoother experience.
@tournesol@transcendentempress Looking at the compromises made for the Switch’s Stray port compared to the game on a PS4 or PS5—it’s kinda sad.
The real sales juicing activity in my opinion was in releasing multiple Switch editions in collectible motifs.
Putting my reminiscing hat on because this seems like a good place to discuss this: The Gameboy line back in the day was the main money maker for Nintendo for a while (especially after the failure of the Wii U). They made so many variations, expanded capabilities, new gimmicks, cheaper versions (thinking about the 3DS and 2DS split). The Switch has effectively (literally?) supplanted the Gameboy line.
