My 14yo son would like to learn how to read academic papers, so I offered to read one together with him. He wants to start with a paper about Rust (for context, he has written tens of thousands of lines of Rust, from a raytracer to a library for constructing custom Minecraft servers). I don't know any Rust, but of course I know a good deal of PL theory and how to read research papers; I think we will make a good team. Any suggestions of good papers for us to read?

@byorgey Maybe that would be interesting, as you seem to both be curious, to compare articles from different fields. Like medecine / geology / geography / computer sciences?

An idea, if you have no subscription at home: you could search interesting titles in Nature or other famous journal, then search for open articles from their main authors on the same subject.

Don't forget to ask yourselves the main question: how could I thrust it? (It's not only about reading the article, specially in an unknown field: has the article been quoted and, more important, how has it been quoted? Critical quotes - even a short critical sentence - are the best: another specialist in that field took the time to read this article carefully and report about it, which is really a good point)

Good exploration and discovery!
