I can't say anything about other country because I never experience any of them and I don't understand everything too
(I'll try to explain but my english voc is hardly good enough)

To explain how it works in France
When people work, at the end of the month they receive their paid paper
And since we have "sécurité social" (social security, that give us a big help to pay medical bills or medical stuff) and other things like this, it means that some of our pay go to those taxes.
Everyone pay for it, and it give everyone this big help.
And you add an insurance, that reduces more medical stuff bills (everyone can have an insurance. Because there is one that is free for the poors)
So, we got a little less payment at the end of the month. (Cotisation)
But, the money that miss at the end of the month, it goes in sécurité social and for the retirement (not sure of the term. I mean, when people stop working because too old. In france it is about 62 years. So people get paid when older and not working, thanks to that)

And, about 6 years ago, we got a sort of arguments about tax
Some people want to stop this sécurité sociale.
Because they want to receive their paid full, with the money in their account instead in taxes
But they can't understand how much we are privileged. When I went to the drugs store, last month, I paid nothing.
I pay only 14€ by month for my insurance, and I am disabled
And I pay : nothing for my medicine
When i go to the doctor, I pay nothing.
When I go to the hospital, I pay nothing
My aunt paid nothing for her cancer (she is okay now)
And that is thanks to the sécurité sociale.

Some french people can't understand that, if we stop those tax, we gonna pay a lot more each medical stuff. The little stuff include.
My aunt could never pay for the traitement without it.

People can't understand that the money they don't get directly in their account, it is very little in comparaison of what we could paid without them.

So yeah, when I see what American have to pay for even little medical stuff, I am astonished.
And more when french people ask for it.
