I understand how we got here, and why. Unfortunately this is yet another paver stone along the pathway to the defeat of Open Source by the very thing which owes its existence to it.
@pollita half of the reply people here seem to miss that the low quality problem is not unique to github. It's the new normal everywhere thanks to AI. Leaving github does not fix it.
Also, not accepting PRs is like not hiring juniors. How are we going to get experienced good developers into the projects when we shut the door in their faces?
@bagder@pollita This flow isn't ideal, but I think it's basically a hotfix for damage control, and hope they are working on a better solution. Ideally, on top of Contributors, it should be possible to create a PR if you are assigned an Issue. This way, newcomers could look at issues tagged as easy first tasks, ask to be assigned (that also lets the PM and other people know that this issue is being looked into) and once they are done, they can submit a PR because they are assigned a task. Though in some ways, that moves the problem from PRs to Issues: it works when looking at existing issues, but who should be able to create issues? If everyone can, there will be a flood of sloppy issues being created...
