@tauon@tournesol configuration issue? are you using a fully featured desktop environment like GNOME/KDE or are you hacking together individual standardized components? if the latter, you probably need to configure a sleep hook to actually lock the screen before you suspend.
for instance, swayidle lets you create sleep hooks on the fly like so: swayidle -w before-sleep 'swaylock -f' (run this once upon startup of your session)

If you want to minimize the time it takes to get back to your desktop after getting out of sleep mode, you can, and it is a valid choice in some security threat models. And if you want the sleep mode to also encrypt your drive and require a password on wake, you also can configure it this way.
