AI lawsuits Okay, so if I get what recently came out of lawsuits:
-destroying millions of books to make unauthorised digital copies yourself is fair use if you don't make said copies publicly available
-using others unauthorised digital copies isn't fair use because I guess they were made publicly available

So all in all, they don't give a shit about consent (which, unfortunately, is hardly surprising given the regard they have for consent on other matters).

All they care is whether the copy is going public or not. Which is not a matter of consent, but of money, because what they care first and foremost is defending not having people getting for free what they want them to pay for.

Oh, and one more thing: court says it's okay as long as it's their not-public copies. But what if at some point the AI, which is publicly available, is able to give you the exact replica of the text in an answer?

re: AI lawsuits @transcendentempress given how neural networks work, this will probably mostly happen by accident, if at all, but your point still stands.

There is a lot that could be done regarding the fair use of AI but I don’t think it’ll happen as well.

re: AI lawsuits @orangelantern I mean we live in the world where here they passed a bill in the 2000s which puts a tax on every storage drive you buy just because they came to the conclusion anyone buying them might store unauthorized copies of movie or music on them. So if they do want to cover hypothetical, they can.

re: AI lawsuits @transcendentempress It’s a matter of the influence lobbyists have. In this case, record labels and other big copyright holders made pressure to make this (ridiculous, btw) thing happen.

In the case of AI some of the most powerful players around (money-wise) are lobbying hard for it. So that’s the direction the laws will point.

Also, those people are ancient. They understand what a musical record is, even if they don’t fully understand the digital equivalent. But they already struggle with the concept of the internet, better believe they have no idea whatsoever what AI is and how it will actually impact anything.

Best I expect them to do is parroting what lobbyists tell them what it is.
