🚨 Meta announced today that it will introduce ads on WhatsApp, which will be based on personal data from Facebook and Instagram. This move further consolidates Meta's social networking monopoly. EU law was actually supposed to prevent this.
@Varpie@noybeu I think Meta takes the right to link your phone number to FB or Insta account if registered there. You (and I) should not be concerned by this. Furthermore they recently suggested me to add an email to "protect" my WA account, I suspect this is another way to link you to some central account db they have. There is also the "Channels" which requires (or used to at least) accepting additional terms.
I believe these are all the ways Meta might collect data about people for ads.
@Varpie@noybeu then there is the hidden way by using your address-book as a social graph and the frequency of communication with some people, they can derive your interest based on that. It might be wrong, but it is probably enough for them to sell ad space for a good enough price.
@amdg2@noybeu That's true, I didn't think about that. Since WhatsApp is end to end encrypted, they can't use the content of discussion to push advertising, but they can use the profiles of people we talk to (that they have access to with Facebook and Instagram) in order to infer interests.
