I used curl to test my handwritten HTTP 2.0 server. That includes sending chunked, compression support, SSL with the 3 basic auth methods, all the various verbs, etc. I could write curl in a 3 day weekend comfortably.

@bagder I think most of them are not wrong, writing a simple HTTP 1.1 client isn't too difficult. They just don't see all the other use cases, because they don't write applications that fully make use of HTTP... Or it's abstracted by their library and they have all the benefits without any of the complexity, and just that part would take more than 3 days while relying on libcurl.
