Somehow despite all my years of crocheting, a project involving cables has never really come up until now.

But no worries, right? I'm a decent hooker. Cables in knitting are easy as anything. What could possibly go wrong?

Well, it's taken about ten attempts to get this far and make something approaching a cable swatch without it getting completely tangled beyond hope. Turns out it's a lot harder than it looks!

So cross your fingers for me as I attempt to cast on the actual project. Thankfully the related goal for the was just to get started, not to have it actually finished (or any good) 😅

Row 1 update: crochet cables are definitely what the phrase "trust the process" was invented for 😬
One end of a thin line of wobbly crochet that extends off the right side of the photo. It's supposedly the start of a cabled pattern, but just looks like a complete mess of green yarn at this stage.

Day 2 status on the cable adventure.

It's ok though, think I've actually figured out what I was doing wrong. For reals, this time!

And as if by magic ✨

For those following the adventure, this is probably attempt eight or so and I finally figured out why my cables were so tragic.

Turns out, incorrect hook placement on one stitch in each big cable was having a knock-on effect to the following stitches AND the following row, and just making a disaster of everything. Fixed that one tiny thing, everything is now fine!

Crochet cables? Completed it mate.
A narrow strip of bottle green crocheted fabric laid diagonally on a black and white tablecloth, with the rest of the yarn skein to its right. The crochet piece consists of a repeating pattern of big and small cables, and looks actually quite competently done if I do say so myself!
