We love AMD Zen series CPUs, which have gone from strong to stronger each generation, but we are still wary of any modern AMD graphics cards because of drivers issues :PleadingFace:
Our Radeon RX Vega 64 and Radeon RX 5700 XT both caused us issues with random PC reboots or black screens of death (requiring a full power off at the PSU, pressing the power button to drain any remaining power, then turning PSU back on to reboot).
With the same power supplies, we've had zero such issues with the Nvidia GPUs we've had in recent times.
We dislike supporting Nvidia, but we are honestly still anxious over getting those kinds of reset issues again 😞
@SleepyCatten Ah, good old issues with powerful but power hungry models. I had a bit of those in the very beginning when I bought my old R9 290X
Ever since I have been very careful with the power consumption of my cards, both to ease the energy bill, and to avoid any aforementioned problems.
Otherwise, I keep continuing the always Radeon on main since 20 years now.😊 Nvidia has always been too expensive on the performance/price ratio for my budget.
@transcendentempress Yeah. Their mid-range cards seem to be okay, but the high-end ones seem to have a much higher-rate of hardware issues 😞
We know it wasn't a power supply issue, as we went through the steps of: Using separate rails to each of the power inputs Upgrading to a new 750W, higher-specced Corsair PSU
We'd had a 750W PSU previously and in hindsight we don't think there was any issue with it, but the problem with troubleshooting tech issues like this is that you need to gradually rule out factors :PleadingFace:
We'll have to stick with RTX 2070 Super for as long as possible, as due to other expenses (esp. transition costs), we won't be able to afford a newer card for a long while.
@SleepyCatten Though, tbf, very high-end Nvidia cards have had their issues with that those last few years, as they're also power-hungry 300-400+W monsters. Which is quite annoying related to the insane prices they're sold at.😅
Your 2070 Super is similar to the Vega 56 I have, around 215W, so a bit high but still in the reasonable range, honestly now after the R9 290X time, even though the card has been working absolutely fine ever since despite the weird stuff at the start, I won't buy anything higher than 230W.
