Saw an ultrasonic cleaner the other day when we went at Aldi, I've always been curious, are those really working? Are there objects/specific kind of dirts they are super effective for?

@transcendentempress the ultrasonic sound waves cause micro cavitation. Tiny pockets of water that momentarily boil to a gas from the pressure, then collapse on themselves. Lots of very tiny explosions. So they're best for hard things, that can resist that force. It can blast the coating off of electroplated jewelry.

@sophie So is it the most useful for getting rid of coats and paints on objects? Could it work on plastic objects, like game miniatures, or is it the most efficient on metallic thingies?

@transcendentempress It wont remove the paint per se... just mess it up a lot. The advice is to test it out on things first, like if you've got something of the same material try it on that.

Ultrasonic cleaners are pretty angry devices. Metal is the common target, I've seen them used to clean geological samples (crystals). Might work with some plastics... but the softer things get, the more danger they're in. There's a video floating around of one destroying aluminium foil for example...

The idea is, when the ultrasonic wave hits a surface, it's reflected back on itself, and that reflection overlaps with the incoming wave constructively reinforcing it, and that point of pressure is what causes the water to cavitate. Water cavitation is an entire field in of itself.

@transcendentempress seems there's plenty of folks on YouTube that use them to clean minis... but I'd definitely start on one that you don't mind getting damaged.
