What did Microsoft actually change with "new" teams?

Other than the UI being slightly different. Why did it require an entire new installation and constant reminders

"ooooh, we're switching to the new teams in a few weeks!" has been displayed for the past three months, I feel

@Saki Same as with Windows 11, other than the UI whose changes can be very annoying, nothing fundamentally changes under the hood from Windows 10.
