Dear #sewing people, I have this second hand bike bag and I assume it has some sort of vinyl sheet glued on the inside [Polyurethane coating], which is completely giving up. Regardless it is still waterproof but the flaking is really bad. Can I just... slap a new vinyl sheet on top ? Or would it be more reasonable to make a new lining ?
(I could scrape the whole coating out but I don't have it in me right now)
@just_chill that's probably a polyurethane coating that was applied as a liquid. This seems to happen to most pu-coated items after awhile, and it will eventually no longer be waterproof. You can re-apply a coating to the inside or apply a different coating to the outside. I like to wax the fabric in situations like these, but it's not safe on all synthetics. @cathos sounds like the perfect link, thanks a lot :meow_sign_thx: I will probably go for a more environmentally friendly replacement eventually, but for now just a new lining to protect my stuff from the flakes.
@just_chill do you know what is this material? It reminds me of some rain jackets that are flocking away and which dusting is quite bad for the environment. Do you want that bag to be waterproof even on the seams? If so then a proper lining might be a good idea. If not slapping some vinyl could do the job nicely.
@Maker I don't know exaclty what it is but it looks like standard waterproof bag material. A thick canvas-like fabric with a (prevously) slick coating on the inside. I was wondering if I the new vinyl would stick well on the old flakes, and it seems it wouldn't.
@just_chill oh then lining it is ;) (on the bright side it will give you a nice opportunity to add inner pockets and some nice extra stuff (and you will know your bag so much better :) )
