the official portrait of Charlie looks fucking evil. it looks exactly how all portraits of the heads of bloody empires would look if they reflected the true brutality of imperialism. but apparently that's not what the artist was going for? it's like the Portrait of Dorian Gray for colonisers

the official portrait of Charles, posed standing with his sword drawn, point on the floor and his hands resting on the hilt. he's looking at the viewer. apart from the hands and the head and a little butterfly over his right shoulder, everything is red. everything. his uniform, the sword, all his fake medals, everything. just shades of red in rough brushstrokes. the differentiation between the uniform and the background is only achieved by changing the stroke because the shade barely changes. it looks like it was painted with the blood of the subjugated. it looks like he's burning in hell. only the butterfly is crisp and detailed. everything else is deliberately messy.

@PsyChuan Yeah every brutal figure, every authoritarian colonizer wants to be taken seriously. There's no worse thing, for their own narrative, than being ridiculed by the media.
