Really does feel like I need to stop wasting my time with social media entirely and just go back to blogging; no matter where I run, eventually it all becomes Facebook and Twitter again.

Basically free vs. proprietary software is a matter of public vs. private infrastructures. Stallman's argument that free software advances the state of the art, while with proprietary software you'd need to start over again, perfectly applies to blogging and microblogging: the latter has always been meant for private infrastructures.
@AnarchoNinaWrites Microblogging's ethos is totally incompatible with free software's. Microblog posts don't advance the state of the art, they aren't referenceable, they aren't searchable (efficiently), they can hardly be sorted out (for example they have no title).
The zetabytes that people have published on Instagram will just disappear one day, like tears in the rain.
