@Varpie@nixCraft I think partially because you want to be able to upgrade old computers without changing the housing / mainboard. My roughly 10 year old mainboard is "old enough" to have an m.2 slot, but older ones probably don't. (and I wouldn't want to buy an adapter to insert an 0.5" disk housing in the 3.5" disk cage).
@uvok@nixCraft But that's the thing though, we've kind of moved away from the 3.5" standard (nowadays lots of HDDs are in 2.5") and that's partially thanks to adapters that made it easy to adopt 2.5", now it would be just as easy to move to a smaller format and it would only cost a few bucks for older hardware. I'm sure it will be done eventually, I'm just surprised it isn't here already since the SSDs are already mostly air.
