hot take, arch linux, kinda rant probably a hot take but
if you manage to break arch or an arch deriviate in like a day then maybe, just maybe, its your fault and not arch being "unstable"
yes, arch does make questionable decisions sometimes and manual interventions can be a pain in the ass
but manual interventions do not happen that often, I highly doubt that anyone gets struck by them on day one on arch

There's this lazy way of branding Fedora, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, etc. as “for beginners” and Archlinux or OpenBSD as “for advanced users”, and this is bullshit; most users won't ever see a benefit in using Archlinux, they'll just develop a depression instead, just like you'd develop a depression by using KDEnlive for several years, instead of enjoying your life

re: hot take, arch linux, kinda rant @xenia It does have use cases, for example it's a perfect Guix + wifi distribution where you just install Guix, import your manifest, and are ready to go. I plan to run Arch Hurd with basically just Guix and a Guix manifest.

For my cousin? Lol, I don't hate him. I'd recommend him to use Linux Mint.

I feel confident enough to run personal servers as a sociology student thanks to MWL btw

re: hot take, arch linux, kinda rant @mwl @xenia Welp, I've recently thought that my relationship to my data was rather organized, thanks to your book, and last week I've looked at my messy flat, mumbled “this isn't *square*”, and started to clean things up.

That's errm… My best hope at recovering from social media, school abuse, a private communication infrastructure, and a lot of bullshit from the FSF.

As I said, this book has been a milestone in my recovery.

re: hot take, arch linux, kinda rant @oceane yeah i understand what you mean, i personally use arch since it allows me to set up secureboot and other hardening features very easily (though im installing nixos as we speak)
though i tend to recommend Fedora instead of Linux Mint

re: hot take, arch linux, kinda rant @xenia Honestly Linux Mint is faster to update, with less bandwidth, and Cinnamon feels just better in terms of UX than GNOME. That's a personal preference but for example, I like that it notifies me that it's found a printer over the wifi.

If we were perfectly honest we'd just tell people there's a consensus between two distributions, and that they should try both, but again we'd have to mention the basic fact that Fedora pulls 50 MB from the background to perform a mere query, while Linux Mint doesn't.

I'm not judging your Linux distro preferences in any way, I'm not pretending Linux Mint would be vastly superior to Fedora, but to be honest, I think that the former is actually great speaking as a Linux user, while the latter is just much, much better than Microsoft Windows.

Does it protect against e.g. a malicious bootloader?

re: hot take, arch linux, kinda rant @oceane yeah that's what it's made for, it verifies ant UEFI binary that's executed (so bootloader and kernel) based on a signature and refuses to boot when it doesn't match
