every new user being shocked that DMs aren't actually private is kinda scary because it means that everybody just assumes DMs on other platforms are private\n\nbecause they aren't. the only difference between fedi and other social media is that fedi admins don't have a vested interest in making you think DMs are private

@starshine I disagree. ActivityPub is an insecure protocol, social media are actually being built on the XMPP standard, where private messages are often end-to-end encrypted by default.

@starshine Tangentially, I'm sorry for being rude but there are few controversies on the XMPP standard because it isn't implemented by complete jackasses managing private data and intimate communications with a “quick and dirty” protocol. UX design is much saner, so male journalists can't get cozy with male XMPP developers over big numbers, which are tied to State capitalism rewarding a class of male engineers and thus to white collar men's socialization, and problems are managed sanely, instead of everyone trying to make a point and pick a side out of optimization for engagement.
