I just read a blog post where “ActivityPub” and “Mastodon” were used interchangeably.

I know this is not the hill I should die on. But it is a real problem that the Fediverse is being handed over to a single individual, and nobody seems to care.

It’s kind of like when your Grandma calls the web “The Facebook” or your Aunt says “I was on The Google checking the scores on ESPN”.

But this time it’s supposed to be open. It’s supposed to be decentralized. It’s not supposed to be one company owned by one person. It’s not supposed to be one implementation in one piece of software.

Just like you didn’t want everyone to call the web “Facebook” you shouldn’t want to call the Fediverse “Mastodon”.

@gabek it's so hard because Mastodon has been made the spearhead of AP and because AP or the Fediverse has no tangible feeling, I don't think they'll come into the pubic use soon enough

@tournesol @gabek I listed this account as "Mastodon" on my site, because "Pleroma" or "Fediverse" seemed confusing for explaining what this was. I think we need a tern for 'activitypub federated microblogging account" that has a nice ring to it.

@tournesol I don’t think ActivityPub needs, or should be, a household name. Just like HTTP isn’t (even though it’s in the URL bar, people still don’t talk about it). But the web is a household name, when talking about all of the web servers and content that exist in the world. Same with the Fediverse. Mastodon describes the Mastodon software. That’s very specific. That’s like if everyone talked about Apache. It doesn’t make sense.
