@ewan Hi, I'm not seeing replies to your post! I'm very interested in this project because it's modular, anyone can develop extensions and flavors, which are basically just the Bonfire codebase with extensions recipes.
It's built as a common, by cooperative “social entrepreneurs”, so it's meant to be as accessible as possible: it's developed in Elixir, there's an Abra recipe for it, and it's meant for an easy onboarding (not just to create an account, but to actually use it).
The interface also feels much chiller than the ones I'm used to.

Because I can create and assign tasks on Bonfire, I can mark them as complete, people can fav/boost that (so they're gamifying the way social media prevent people confronted to a glass ceiling from being productive, to abuse them), I can just create a task, go to it, and be rewarded by my peers; you can also create events, sell items, and even add say an ActivityPub-over-Tor implementation, with Arti.
While Mastodon is focusing on a (silly, to stay polite) BDFL model, Bonfire is embracing the modular nature of ActivityPub by delegating all of the power to third-party extensions developers and admins. It's a liberal, somehow anarchist (I don't think there's a difference) model.

I think there can be communities on Bonfire: you don't have to learn and maybe setup an entire self-hosted infrastructure. Most of the internet's good stuff can only be used by English-speaking users, e.g. IRC, Unix, or Emacs, but Bonfire is bringing that to everyone.
