Last time I brought this up on a UK-based technical mailing list, an entrepreneur—themself from a historically persecuted ethnic group—told me that, "no one cares". Well, I can't make anyone care but if you are in the position to advise on or choose a domain name you should maybe at least know some of the history behind .IO before buying one. @grifferz@matthewskelton „No one cares“ is one of my pet peeves. It is overreach at best and positions people who do care as nobodies. It’s a great example that violent communication is not about bad language or being mean. It’s also about dominating ‚truth‘ at the expense of others.
For example, I do want to contribute to free software, but if you're putting your doc under a .io TLD there's zero chance I'm gonna ever consider learning your stack or to deploy whatever server you're building.
There are literally 3 major competing FLOSS git forges, two of them offering commercial hosting, and you're choosing GitHub to spare $2/month. SMH.
@hardingar@grifferz@matthewskelton I don't know it just feels gross to me, you're becoming complicit of land theft just because your TLD looks like input/output. You're trying to be original in the most unoriginal way.
