@nixCraft Uh no, absolutely not. For example you definitely don't get the same information density with Discord than with IRC.
You don't find the same community affordances, and I'm really just talking about a clear chan separation + timestamps; the concept of Discord âserversâ with everyone spread across several chatrooms feels contradictory to e.g. the tildes as a loose community of intentional communities.
@nixCraft And now I'm going to state the obvious but you don't get the same economic accessibility between IRC and Discord; I remember solving Google's punitive reCAPTCHA (because they couldn't track me) several times to be able to connect from a new IP address on my neighbor's wifi connection, and I was using ProtonMail 3.X back then, with RSA keys, it was awful.
@nixCraft Oh it was on a ThinkPad T60, so to put this in perspective my domestic abuser had taken on using Fedora Linux with i3 because it was more lightweight on the hardware resources, and it would cool down the room. Well of course I couldn't really run Discord with many other tabs and it would make me sweat in the process.
So uhh, no, IRC isn't âDiscord for old peopleâ.
