why linux is a mess
There are a bunch of people working on things and they can't ever agree on standards or boundaries. The main characters of the story are:1) Big projects (like Ubuntu or Gnome) that decide to dictate how things should work, and everyone else be damned.
2) Proprietary software that would rather send a hit team after you than having to change a line of code for your sake.
3) FOSS projects that didn't sign up to maintain a distro, so they don't care about anything. So long as whatever arbitrary choice they made works.
4) Projects that despite calling themselves FOSS, get mad if you so much as package their own software differently than they do. They know better!
5) Low-level libraries that break compatibility. If you had any concerns, should have been on that mailing list months ago.
6) Hardware makers that due to some weird requirement isn't "fully" open source so their stuff is always a pain for everyone forever.
