Wiki cognitive process:
- thing has a name
- thing should be on page named thing
- if thing is not on page named thing, create page thing.
Google docs cognitive process:
- Is thing something I edited recently
- Does thing have unique text I can search for
- Is the single place thing can exist in folder hierarchy semantically meaningful and able to be called to mind
- Is thing lost in an extremely long document full of other things
- Do I still have access to thing, if not, who does
- Did the person who said they would send me individual access to thing remember to do so
- Maybe eventually find thing, add bookmark, repeat process in ~2 weeks
Slack cognitive process
post thing in closest applicable channel
perhaps pin thing
search for thing, copy and pasting link to refresh position in channel
someone who wasnt online asks where thing is. Link to thing posted a dozen more times
thing slips into the ether
rather than building cumulative memory of thing and related things, make it from scratch every time.
Idk how on earth people run labs on slack and google docs, everything feels like you're just trying to build a sandcastle underneath a waterfall constantly. And like... it also turns out that ppl who typically have their contributions overlooked get extra overlooked when everything is built of shifting sand. Its no surprise that everything is so siloed in academia, we rarely think "is it possible for anyone else who isn't me to know this information "
