@chiefgyk3d Hey, curious what your Mastodon self-host setup looks like. Been thinking of tinkering around with a solo/small instance myself but unsure with what to go with. I want to host it myself rather than using a managed provider (i.e. masto.host). Cheers!
@shellsharks I’ve been using @mastohost because I’m scaling pretty fast due to the size of my audience from other platforms. If I do ever move off Masto.Host it will probably be in a scalable AWS setup or racked on my hardware in a data center but I ain’t there yet. My home lab doesn’t have synchronous gigabit unfortunately so it won’t work
@chiefgyk3d@mastohost Copy that! My two main questions/concerns on using masto.host (or similar managed provider) are...
1. I want to have a high character limit, much higher than 500c. My current instance is 13k max per post and I love it.
2. If for whatever reason I want to switch hosting providers or move to self-hosted, is it possible for me to port my instance OUT of the managed provider?
How are you liking masto.host? I'm definitely into the simplicity of it.
1) Technically the 500 character limit is a mastodon standard. You can use Calckey and other apps to post longer posts. I use my Wordpress (which should also have activity pub) for when I make articles and such here and there
2) yes @mastohost will let you migrate your server data to another server.
I am loving Masto Host no real solid complaints it always works, they communicate issues well, support is responsive and I can pay in Bitcoin too
1) True, I suppose I could embrace threaded posts or simply move longer musings to a blog post on my site.
2) Ok ok ok nice... might have to just go with them then. Got some juicy domains that could be fun to use. (or I could go with social.shellsharks.com)...
@shellsharks@chiefgyk3d if you really wanna use mastodon but need to have longer post, you still can use glitch-soc, it's a modified version of mastodon much more customisable, markdown support and all that
