@starshine Tangentially, I'm sorry for being rude but there are few controversies on the XMPP standard because it isn't implemented by complete jackasses managing private data and intimate communications with a “quick and dirty” protocol. UX design is much saner, so male journalists can't get cozy with male XMPP developers over big numbers, which are tied to State capitalism rewarding a class of male engineers and thus to white collar men's socialization, and problems are managed sanely, instead of everyone trying to make a point and pick a side out of optimization for engagement.
@starshine I disagree. ActivityPub is an insecure protocol, social media are actually being built on the XMPP standard, where private messages are often end-to-end encrypted by default.
Yet, Carlson’s listless approach to the Russian dictator, who droned on endlessly, proved a wasted opportunity. Despite Carlson’s passivity, the interview did, in fact, reveal aspects of Putin’s intentions likely unknown to many Americans. For example, Putin blamed Poland for provoking Hitler’s attack on the country in 1939, which sparked World War II – a statement at odds with the facts. He also seemed to signal his desire to attack Poland, or another neighbor, in the near future. Had Carlson’s trip concluded with the interview, it might have been judged journalistically worthwhile.

They knew about Lavabit's fundraising and they (1) didn't implement the DIME, (2) have stayed silent about it, so whereas Levison publicly said that the press might have spared him jail time when he's shut down his company in 2013, he hasn't been so lucky in 2018 and he's probably got an NSL, cancelling all of his plans to make email more secure by developing a modern standard and implementing it on an AGPL-licensed server.
The OpenPGP standard (just like the web) is an excuse for their toxic practices because “someone ought to make money” in a de facto toxic environment. We're currently living in a cult-like era around software because it ought, somehow, to be more and more complex and we ought to build frameworks and SDKs around this. As I write this I'm struggling not to see our entire relationship to IT as enshittified.

As a matter of fact, they're only losing $2/month for accounts amounting to about $12/month, and they've milked mentally vulnerable users for almost a decade. This is, again, literally cheap PR from a literal cult and of course, users of an insecure protocol, whose leading projects apparently don't care about managing their data and personal communications in a secure way, are falling for this.
