When you think about it, "AI" as we see it dawning more as something that does for you rather than as something that helps you do is very much a by-product of the current algorithmes age.
What have algorithms been doing for the past fifteen years or so, for a huge number of users who have been pushed to become perfectly fine with them?
They pick entertainment for you. They weave online social network for you. They choose informations for you.
And people are craving for them, so much have they been made used to them, and dependent on them. On Fediverse we know that better than everywhere else, remember how much of a barrier it has been for so many people when they tried here and were lost or frustrated that no algorithm was there to suggest things to them.
"AIs" were bound to happen anyway. In a lot of tool shapes they take, they are a logical evolution of already existing tools. The only big difference being, again, would they happen as helpers or replacers. And in our time, the growing power of algorithms before their arrival meant the latter for a lot of people in tech who have interests in them being that way.
