@aaronsgiles X-Wing Alliance is not yet part of their new preservation program, in which they do internal tinkering to run the games on modern systems instead of relying on community-made stuff they can't really make the official support of, like they did previously at the risk sometimes of their releases being a bit less faithful to true og game.

So it may be that their current version of XWA is still somehow community-patched by default.
